World Blind Union Audio Description Toolkit
This toolkit aims to familiarise, inform and advise organisations working for/with blind and partially sighted people about the benefits of audio description and on how to achieve it in their respective countries. When incorporated into a programme or a film, audio description can ensure that blind and partially sighted people are able to enjoy that film or television programme independently. Audio Description is like a narrator telling a story, an additional commentary that describes body language, expressions and movements, making the story clear through sound.
This toolkit has been written and compiled by members of the World Blind Union from different countries around the globe. It brings together experiences of these members who have engaged in campaigns on audio description and the lessons they have learnt during this period. It hopes to help build the knowledge base across the World Blind Union membership to campaign for this access feature.
The toolkit has five main sections. The first one explains what audio description is and goes on to state the reasons why it has gained immense popularity and support in the past years. This section also contains sample clips of audio described material in different languages for someone who has never experienced audio description before. Section two looks at the methods of delivery of audio description for a range of media platforms such as television, cinema, and online players. Hoping that the information in section one and two will inspire readers to take action on the promotion of audio description, the third section carries tips on the kind of strategies that have worked best in past years in getting audio description on mainstream media services in some countries. Case studies on the development of audio description across different countries form the fourth section with the final section looking at the future and the provision of audio description on the ever changing technology.
