The WBU is involved in several global campaigns related to the achievement of our objectives and improving access for blind and partially sighted persons.  Please follow the links below to learn more about these specific campaigns.

1. The Right To Sight

Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight is a global initiative of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with a coalition of international Non-Governmental Organizations. The mission is to eliminate the main causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020 by facilitating the planning, development and implementation of sustainable national eye care programs.

For further information, go to: www.v2020.org

2. Education For All Visually Impaired Children (EFA-VI)

A global campaign of the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI) acting in partnership with the WBU to ensure that all girls and boys with blindness or low vision can realize their rights to an education. The campaign is focused on children in the developing world where currently it is estimated that less than 10% have access to primary education.

3.  The Right To Read (R2R)

The WBU is leading a campaign, in partnership with a number of International NGO’s, to increase the availability of materials in accessible formats and to end the current book famine.  The campaign includes working with publishers to increase the amount of accessibly published books.  And working with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to improve copyright law, and enable cross border sharing of accessible materials.

This section contains information about the WBU strategy, the draft WIPO treaty and resources for members to support the campaign.

4. The Right To Work

The WBU is presently working on strategies to improve the employment situation of blind and partially sighted persons around the world. Despite advances in education, rehabilitation, technology and social attitudes, blind and partially sighted persons are among the most likely to be unemployed in all parts of the world. Our initiatives are intended to address this issue.
